Wolfenstein: The New Order (Review)

When Wolfenstein: The New Order was announced back on May 7, 2013, I was overwhelmed with excitement.  I dabbled with the SNES title Wolfenstein 3D and was a huge fan of the 2009 title Wolfenstein.  The 2009 title was what really got me hooked, the story line may not have been that great but the gameplay brought something new to the table.

Though The New Order did not have as much paranormal features as it's predecessor, I still found it very enjoyable.  The game follows it's star William "B.J." Blazkowicz 3 years after the events of Wolfenstein.  After an accident (trying not to give any spoilers!) Blazkowicz finds himself in the year 1960, the Nazis have won World War II and rule the world. There is no resistance.  At least not yet, thats where B.J. comes in.

As far as I'm concerned, the gameplay is incredible.  It's similar to the old First-Person Shooters we used to play,  the weapon wheel, picking up ammunition and health as you go, even the camera movements.  The weapons are fun to use as well, you now have the ability to duel wield rifles, pistols, shotguns, knives and sniper rifles.  To go along with your new weapon abilities, the game is extremely gory.  Shooting an enemy in a certain way turns them into a cloud of blood before your eyes.  It just adds to the fun.  Stealth is an option in this game as well.  If you prefer this method and like a challenge, you can literally complete most of the game with just a knife and a silenced pistol.

The New Order does not include online play, it is strictly a single player campaign game.  I did not mind it since I'm not a huge online fan but the game has a 12 hour campaign with a decent story line.  So they make up for the lack of multiplayer by giving you a lengthy campaign with a high chance of replayablity.

This game uses the new id Tech 5 engine.  It was used in Rage back in 2011 and now only did it make the gameplay smoother but it also made it easier on the developers.  This engine will be used on the future products such as The Evil Within and Doom 4 (or just DOOM).  If you pre-ordered a copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order you should have received a DOOM Beta code, which is in production by Bethesda Softworks  and id Software.  The beta should be released soon since a code was given out worldwide.  I am personally looking forward to future products from these guys after playing Wolfenstein.

So in the end I give it a solid 8/10 and recommend it to anyone looking for a good game to play in their spare time!  Go pick up your copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order in stores today, it's available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.
